By the way, is there a way to respond to articles? What does ‘Excerpt?’ mean. Do I need to press ‘save’ after I type an excerpt?

Yes, cou can respond, just click on “comments welcome” below the article, like I did right now. You can , as an author turn this feature on or off when you write or edit the article. Its a bit hidden,though, so I now put in on as a default.
The author will get a message of this response and may decide if to publish or not. (he needs to follow a link and put the status of the comment to "visible". As we all have full access, we might put our comments visible ourselves, without waiting for the author to do so
Excerpts are only for Archival purposes and probably not too useful. But if you want to use it, you must “save” it, like everything else.
